The Musical Crowbar

The Musical Crowbar is an icon, a topic of conversation spoken about in hushed tones away from the main body of society, in sleazy dives and university halls. Right from the back room of The Angel to the PJM laundrette.
This is the place to open your mind to a new kind of listening.
It's pretty obscure, you probably haven't heard of it.

The Corbin Awards (or how did I drink so much wine?)

I think we were all a little surprised by the Corbins last night, those of us who hadn’t been before. They were brilliant of course, although the winners weren’t really a surprise. But it was good all the same to see the dedication rewarded by the society.

I also managed to drink a bottle of white wine and a pint of Magners while still at the event. Everybody was pretty drunk by the end, but I think that added to the charm of the whole thing.

Now most importantly, The Musical Crowbar didn’t win anything. BUT, we did get a nomination for Best New Show so we do have some fans within the society that I didn’t know of. That’s a personal victory for me, I haven’t been doing radio for that long, so to even get nominated does mean a lot for both me and Andy.

My good friend Zak Jones from the Emergency Broadcast also got nominated for Best Producer for the times that he’s stepped in for Andy and produced on the Musical Crowbar. I’ll take that as a victory as well. Zak is a really talented producer, and he always does a far better job than I do when moonlights on the show, it’s always a pleasure to work with him.

While I’m at it Andy got nominated for Best Face For Radio (He took it reasonably well) and Zak also won a nomination for Sexiest Male. While not a real award, Zak was still pretty happy with that =P

Finally I want to make a note to thank committee member Kyle Arrowsmith for making the awards that looked really amazing last night. For some insanely criminal reason, Kyle wasn’t thanked at the ‘thanks to’ speech at the end. So I’m thanking him here. He worked really hard on those awards and ruined our dining room table so he deserves some praise.

As always the Musical Crowbar will be back on Thursday at 5PM, make sure to listen in, and have yourselves a good weekend.

“And the award for best new show goes too….”

Nahh not us obviously. But it is the day of the Aberystwyth Student Media awards, The Corbins.

This is my first (and obviously the Musical Crowbar’s) award ceremony so I’m pretty excited for it. That and the free food and the capacity to get drunk while wearing a suit is also pretty appriecited.

Honestly I hate wearing a suit but duty calls right?

I’m not sure if the Courier is live blogging this, but I might just tweet out a few comments and award winners over on the the Musical Crowbar’s Twitter.

It’ll be fun ^^

No show this week.

Hey guys, just an update to say that there won’t be a musical crowbar this week due to severe technical issues.

Essentially the main computer thingy is pretty broken.

If you’re totally missing you some musical crowbar why not listen back to our past shows here.

While you’re there you can totally check out the links to our twitter and facebook.

We’ll miss doing the show, but I’m currently drowning under essay deadlines (like many of you are) so maybe this is a fortuitous event.

Speak to guys later ^^

Last nights show and Bay Radio’s Photoshoot…

Last night had to be one of the best shows I’ve personally ever done. I guess I’m just happy because I took role of presenter back for a day. You see usually, Andy takes the role of main presenter (Sounds boards, the DJ system- stuff like that) And myself (Ed) usually acts as Producer (I’m also the one on facebook, and the studios MSN/Skype) so with Andy ill last night I was forced to switch roles.

I borrowed my housemate/friend Zak to fill in for Andy and I’m glad to say it went really well. Zak’s got plenty of experience with being a producer and he filled the role much better that I usually do (I’m exceptionally sloppy, sorry about that). I managed to remember my training and we got a good show done. It was a very music intensive show and it was all about the music: which is what I love. Zak is infinitely knowledgeable about the bands he likes and he has a very wide music taste. It’s safe to say I learnt a lot.

The show isn’t up on rewind yet but it will be shortly, check it out here in a few days.

In other news, a couple days ago our marketing manager Kyle did a photoshoot for Bay Radio members. These pictures will go up on the site within a week and yours truly is doing the post production on them. The photoshoot went quite well, I fulfilled my role as one of the marketing team and hung out in the studio for a few hours. It was a good atmosphere, which might sound strange for a photoshoot.  But there’s a lot of talent in Bay Radio, and a lot of ideas for photos and stuff like that.

I’ve spoken and plugged my show/the society enough for one day.

See you guys next week,

Ed.

We’re back!

Hey guys, I haven’t written to you in a while, because it’s been the Christmas hols and both me and Andy have had lots of exams this January.

But the big news is (obviously from the title) that at the GM last night we got our first semester slot back and we’ll be online tonight!

We’re got a couple of new features and of course we’ll be playing all that semi obscure music and a few classics that you love.

We’re on as always at 5PM, so have a listen at bay-radio.co.uk

discovering music and special guests.

One of the pretences of the Musical Crowbar is that we play some crazy music that you haven’t heard before. And then you love it (hopefully) We want you to always here something new whilst still hearing a few favourites along the way.

Well I’ve decided to be a little more adventurous this time. By listening to music I’ve never heard before and can barely even classify. It’s pretty trippy. Like an uncomfortable modern, distorted shoegazing. With some indie and alternative rock.

Anyway, I’ve had a lot of fun with this, so I hope you guys enjoy it on the show tomorrow.

Also, I’m pretty chuffed to announce that one of my oldest friends is visiting us here in Aberystwyth and will be a guest on the Musical Crowbar tomorrow.

So yeah, we’re looking forward to the show, hope you guys listen in.

Next week we’ll have 2 tickets for the PJ party up for grabs, so make sure you listen in for a chance to win those.

Competition time!

Instead of writing an actual blog, I’m going to announce a little competition that Andy and myself at the Musical Crowbar are going to run.

Here’s how it works. We’ll play 3 songs that are featured in a TV show or film, and you the listener messages in with what show it is.

The winner gets a ‘super secret prize’.

The nature of said prize is Andy’s domain, I am clueless as to what it’ll be. But I’m sure it’ll be nice.

Hope you have you listening and taking part this Thursday at 5pm.

3rd show in and things are really starting to get interesting.

Here at the musical crowbar, myself (Ed) and Andy have done 3 shows now, and we’ve had a lot of fun so far, really it’s been a riot.

One of the best things so far has been talking with you guys, our wonderful listeners through facebook, twitter and of course the studio messaging system. We love hearing your requests no matter how obscure (or indeed cheesy) they may be. If you saw my air guitar and general erratic dancing on the last show (we have a webcam) then hopefully that goes some way to prove how much I really love being part of Bay Radio and how much fun Andy and myself have in playing the show out to you guys.

Bay Radio have very recently just let us have our logins for the station website and now we have a profile up and running which is in turn linked to our tumblr, twitter and facebook. With this in mind, we’ve decided it’s time to really start to plug the show- and update our blog!

You can expect lots of cool features from the musical crowbar, and it really is awesome when you guys get involved.

Thanks for listening! ^^

Ed.

We finally have a slot!

The Musical Crowbar is going to be on air tomorrow at 5pm. Listen live at bay-radio.co.uk
